Raspberry Custard Pudding (1882)

from The Book of Forty Puddings by Susan Anna Brown

I bought the adorable little Book of Forty Puddings on a whim while I was researching Susan Anna Brown’s other cookbook The Invalid’s Tea Tray. If you recall, we recently delved into her life story while drinking her medicinal flaxseed lemonade.

In her short time, she didn’t just whip up recipes for the sick, though. She also had a variety of goodies for every palate. Including forty puddings!

I chose the Raspberry Custard Pudding because I recently was driving around New Hampshire with a friend. I was doing a program on Folk Tales at the Remick Country Doctor Museum and we had a great road trip…

The Remick Country Doctor Museum in Tamworth is a really interesting look at historical medicine through the lens of two subsequent country doctors. You should go. Pictured here is me and writer/librarian friend Sara Lesley Arnold!

On the way back, we ran into the Old Country Store in Moultonborough. There, they had some lovely raspberry preserves. Why not put them to good use?
